What Inspired You To Pursue A Career In Healthcare?

When I was little, I loved sculpting and drawing the human form. I also loved playing surgeon with my dolls. My dolls would get “injuries,” and I’d sew them up and help them feel good as new. I like making people feel better, and this feels like a natural progression of a lifelong passion.

How Did That Lead To Medical Aesthetics?

I’ve had a 20+ year-long career, and I’ve seen a lot of different sides of medicine:

●     I have a master’s degree in nursing

●     I’m a Nurse Practitioner (NP)

●     I’ve held several leadership positions in clinics throughout the GTA

●     I’m one of the first NP investigators in Canadian research and clinical trials

I still wanted something else, and it wasn’t until some colleagues talked to me about medical aesthetics that I felt something in me light up. Could I marry my medical knowledge and my interest in helping people build confidence through aesthetic medicine? Amazing!

Opening My Own Clinic

The road to medical aesthetics expertise was a lot of aesthetic education and training, and four years working in established clinics. That’s also what I needed in order to feel ready to open an independent practice as a nurse injector in Mississauga.

I launched Pattented Aesthetics Medical using my last paycheque and a lot of courage. Now I have my own clinic, staff, and some well-earned grey hairs as the lead nurse practitioner and owner of my own clinic!

Has Your Professional Experience Shaped The Way You Approach Patient Care & Aesthetics?

I may focus on skin health and antiaging now, but there isn't a day that goes by where I don’t draw on other areas I’ve specialized in, including:

●     Primary care

●     Cardiology

●     Mental health

●     Hospital and ER medicine

●     Clinical research

My knowledge and experience mean that I can provide cosmetic injectables here in Mississauga, and offer a comprehensive care model.

What Motivated You To Open Pattented Aesthetics In Mississauga

I wanted to be in charge of my own practice so that I could ensure quality care while providing evidence-based aesthetic treatments. It’s important to me to have a space where it’s easy to build relationships and trust with patients. I also had the crazy idea that I’d enjoy being my own boss.

How Would You Describe Your Philosophy Re: Beauty, Confidence, Aging, & Natural-Looking Results?

The Pattented Aesthetics Medical mantra is: “Integrity and results.”  Results come with knowledge, but our integrity sets us apart. I offer transparent education and advice. Will it work or won’t it? Do you need it? I’ll be truthful.

We all define “aging gracefully” in our own way. Who’s to say what that means? I’m trying to ensure that you look familiar to yourself. I want to help you maintain and enhance the version of you that you are most comfortable inhabiting, in the safest way possible.

When I say “natural looking” to clients, I contextualize that as the difference between how we look after a period of great sleep vs crummy sleep. I’m trying to conjure the best version of the patient with all their inherent assets.

What Do You Think People Misunderstand Most About Medical Aesthetics & Cosmetic Treatments?

Treatments are often stigmatized. People think it’s about making someone look fake or superficial, but skilled hands and eyes, and facial balancing create natural-looking results and confident patients.

Why Is Patient Education Such An Important Part Of Your Consultation Process?

Patients receiving any medical treatment must legally understand what they are agreeing to. There is variance in outcomes for any treatment--nothing is without risk. That should be explained.

Patients are calmer without the fear of the unknown. For best results, everyone should be on the same page.

What Role Does Trust Play In Your Relationship With Patients?

Treatments are more successful when you trust your practitioner. Pattented Aesthetics Medical uses education and transparency as our primary trust-building tools.

Understanding the treatment process- the benefits and risks, potential downtime, and when to expect results- makes it easier to trust.

How Do You Help Clients Feel Comfortable & Confident When They’re Considering Treatments?

Where there’s trust, comfort and confidence follow, and education is the first step in building trust. Providing patient-focused aesthetic care means offering accurate information so patients can make informed choices.

Some of the things I do during a medical aesthetics consultation to support the client include:

  1. Laying out the available options to achieve the desired outcome—even when that’s a referral to another practitioner

  2. Explaining what will happen during the procedure

  3. Reviewing risks and benefits

  4. Discussing pain control options and pain sensitivity

  5. Set realistic expectations

  6. Explain outcome timing variability

This helps to build comfort and confidence in the practitioner- trust. People come to me for their medical aesthetic treatments in Mississauga because I take the time to make sure everyone is on the same page.

What Makes A Treatment Plan Personalized Vs. “One-Size-Fits-All”?

Everyone has unique skin presentations. It’s easier for me to personalize treatment because no two clients are the same, and different patients will require different protocol combos to achieve their goals.

There are many treatments designed to target specific concerns, but you have to understand the patient before you decide which of your tools is right for the job.

How Do You Balance The Medical Science Side Of Aesthetics With The Artistic Side?

Safely producing results worthy of my patients means coming at medical aesthetics holistically. You need to be a trained medical professional, but you also need a sense of artistry and facial anatomy expertise to understand how to approach facial balancing.

Medically, I consider:

●     Facial vessels

●     Ligaments

●     Muscle

●     Skin layers

●     Overall anatomy—particularly facial

I’m using my artistic skills to know how/where to:

●     Correct shadows

●     Manipulate contours and lines

●     Restore volume

I want to respect and optimize the shape of your face so that light reflects in a pleasing manner, giving you a natural-looking, balanced, and refreshed appearance.

It’s using aesthetic medicine to create art.

Why Is Ongoing Training So Important In Medical Aesthetics?

Advanced training and a wide scope of practice are essential to achieve positive outcomes.

Because no treatment is without risk, I need to be able to anticipate problems ahead of time and address them when they arise. To appropriately confront issues, continued training is critical. To stay up to date on the best in safe and effective tech, I have to stay in the know.

How Do You Stay Current In This Fast-Moving Industry?

Like other responsible practitioners, I attend educational events and stay on top of accredited research that promotes evidence-based aesthetic treatments. I’m experienced and have foundational knowledge that helps me assess new trends as they arise. Continued education hones that knowledge.

At my Mississauga clinic, my staff and I investigate and trial all procedures and products before we adopt them. The “New Thing” may have hype, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe or effective.

What Are Some Of The Most Common Concerns Clients Come To You With?

Some of the most common concerns I see are:

●     Skin laxity

●     Hyperpigmentation

●     Wrinkles

●     Facial-volume loss

●     Acne

●     Scars

●     Skin lesions (moles/skin tags)

When recommending treatments, we usually offer a variety of options from least invasive and budget-friendly to advanced protocols, depending on the client’s needs and goals.

How Do You Decide Whether A Treatment Is Appropriate For Someone?

We consider your medical history, skin type, budget, schedule, and goals when we recommend treatments. The consultation is our opportunity to learn more about you so that we can safely recommend treatments that align with your wants and needs.

Why Do You Place A Strong Emphasis On Skin Health, Collagen Support, And Long-Term Rejuvenation Vs. Quick-Fix Treatments?

Maintaining and improving your skin starts at home and is a commitment to self-care. Even though I provide efficacious treatments, the patient needs to have a certain amount of follow-through in order for there to be a chance of achieving optimal results. I discuss collagen stimulation treatments with clients because collagen is the foundation of rejuvenated-looking skin.

The best thing you can do right now to improve your skin health and anti-aging efforts is to invest in medical-grade skincare and mineral-based sunscreens, and then use them every day. Why?

Quality medical-grade skincare: The quality and concentration of active ingredients are higher and more effective than in over-the-counter products.

Mineral sunscreen: Reflects UV rays instead of absorbing them. Other kinds of sunscreen protect your skin from cancer, but mineral sunscreen with iron oxides does that and goes further by protecting your skin from hyperpigmentation and continuation of melasma.

I love seeing my clients exuding skin confidence. When we invest in ourselves, it shows. When my clients take some time to start taking care of themselves, those changes, when paired with what I can offer, have lasting results.

What Do You Enjoy Most About Helping Patients Improve Concerns Like Acne Scarring, Skin Texture, & Aging Skin?

Did you know there’s a link between skin quality and self-perception? When we feel good in our skin:

●     Social anxiety eases

●     Confidence is boosted

●     Our brains produce less cortisol (the stress hormone), and more dopamine & serotonin (mood boosters)

●     Skincare routines create positive feedback loops, promoting self-care and self-love.

Knowing that I’ve helped someone achieve better skin confidence is rewarding for me.

What Treatments Or Technologies Do You Feel Are Currently Underrated Or Misunderstood By The Public?

TCA CROSS (trichloroacetic acid chemical reconstruction of skin scars) with subcision is a treatment that improves atrophic scarring (ice pick, boxcar, etc). Thanks to my specially developed ‘Pattented’ protocol, I have reduced the risk of hyperpigmentation that is common with this procedure, and likely the primary reason that other practitioners don’t offer it.

I’ve had patients come to me after investing lots of money in other clinics on treatments with CO2 lasers, PRP, or microneedling, and then they didn’t get results. TCA CROSS usually works for them. When paired with subcision, TCA CROSS promotes smoother skin by releasing tethered scarring.  Even though this treatment has a high patient satisfaction score, when performed correctly, it is definitely under-utilized.

What Kind Of Experience & Atmosphere Do You Want People To Feel When They Walk Into Pattented Aesthetics?

I want to create a relaxing environment. We offer refreshments and comfortable treatment areas. My consultations are 100% complimentary with no pressure to proceed that day, even if we could.

I want people to feel cared for. Patients should feel like their concerns and questions have been addressed, and that they’re receiving value and results for their time and investment.
